Using Your Phone for Short Stays in Bali (90 Days & Less in Bali)

Using your phone for short stays in Bali, what you can do is opt for a “Tourist” registration.

These are available in the airport and practically all official offices of mobile operators in Indonesia, it is a convenient and easy way to stay connected using your phone. No taxes are need to be paid and all you need is your passport and your phone.

Long Stays in Bali (Over 90 Days in Bali)

If you’re planning a long term stay in Bali, a simple tourist in Bali registration won’t be enough. If you are using your overseas phone in Bali, you will have to register its IMEI.

What is an IMEI? An IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a 15-17-digit code that is given to every mobile phone. This number is used by service providers to uniquely identify valid devices.

The day you arrive at the airport in Bali, make sure you register your phone for a $500 exemption.

The IMEI registration tent is at the baggage claim belt, before exiting the arrivals hall.

Alternatively, you can also visit the Office of Taxes & Duties here in Bali.

You’ll have to pay taxes. In general, the amount of tax to be paid by foreigners is 40% of the cost of the phone. Say for instance that your phone cost $800. Minus the $500 exemption. Then the tax you have to pay is $120.

If you did not register your phone in Bali on the day of your arrival, the tax will be charged from the full cost of the phone device.
